my design Approach

I create meaningful experiences by focusing on purpose and emotion.

DOUBLE DIAMOND FRAMEWORK

I like using the Double Diamond (from the Design Council) as my design process because it gives equal importance to understanding and defining the problem, as much as to the ideation phase. Based on Dan Nessler re-take, I have defined my own approach focusing on purpose and emotion, which I think is crucial when designing new products.

first diamond - FINDING the PURPOSE

The first diamond to me is all about finding the purpose of the product, and therefore make sure I am “doing the right thing”. The way I find the purpose is by understanding the user, the business needs, and looking at what is technically feasible. This purpose will be the base for every design decision later in the process.

PRINCIPLES OF THIS PHASE:

  • Active listening
  • Empathy
  • Asking why

second diamond - designing for EMOTION

To me “doing things right” is about coming up with ideas based on emotions and experiences, before even focusing on function and form. That way I can make sure the way a product or service is experienced is aligned with the purpose and that it creates an added value to the user.

PRINCIPLES OF THIS PHASE:

  • Form and function follow experience
  • Focus on emotion towards the added value rather than towards the form and function
  • Dare to be different if it creates value
